SNOWDONIA ~ 08

Autumn leaves

October 19th ~ 5 nights

2008 will be our fourth year in this beautiful and dramatic part of the British Isles with its ancient peaks, valleys and castles and spectacular coasts and rivers. Our visit this year will be for five nights in Autumn, a particularly beautiful time in Snowdonia, with changing colour all about us. We plan that your itinerary will include: A journey through the Gwynant Valley and the Pass of Llanberis for a fascinating visit to the Welsh Slate Museum before crossing the famous Menai Straits and on to Angelsey where we will visit Red Wharf Bay, Beaumaris and Penmon Point with its wonderful views to Puffin Island. Then, if time allows, more glorious Snowdonia scenery as we travel home on this longer day through the Ogwen Valley; A second day will offer a tour of Gwydir Castle in the beautiful Conwy Valley built around 1500 and a fine example of a Tudor courtyard house currently being restored by its new owners. The panelled Dining Room of 1640 has now been repatriated from the New York Metropolitan Museum - a fascinating story! Then on to one of the finest Gardens in the country at Bodnant. More lovely little lanes will deliver us surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery and home through Ffestiniog. We get to know our pretty riverside host village of Beddgelert, its shops, vistas and folklore then spectacular lanes will deliver us to Harlech, set on a towering rock above Tremadog Bay, and its seemingly impregnable castle fortress surely one of the most dramatic in Wales. After lunch it is on to Portmeirion the unashamedly romantic Italianate village resort built by Clough Williams-Ellis; another day will take us out to the Lleyn Peninsula through the spectacular Drws y Coed. A coastal stop on the cliffs above Porth Dinllaen then high upon Mynydd Mawr we will take in a splendid vista across to Bardsey Island, visit the pretty little village of Aberdaron, a pilgrim church and the lovingly restored 16th century house of Plas yn Rhiw with stunning views over Cardigan Bay before travelling home across the spectacular Mynydd Rhiw. As ever we will spend as much of our time as possible on the Byways and lanes. Snowdonia scenery is never less than spectacular with the added delight on this holiday of October colours! We will take two of our evening meals out, both included in the price, at good local hostelries.
