BOWLAND, WESTERN DALES & SOUTHERN LAKES ~08June 4th & October 10th ~ 7 nightsThis is always on of our most popular holidays in a lovely area, combining aspects of Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cumbria. We are delighted to return once more to our excellent base of Arbutus House in the heart of the highly picturesque village of Clapham. Again we will combine a couple of days in the unspoiled and very little known "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty", high moor and lush valley that is the Forest of Bowland with a day in the lovely Southern Lakeland around Lake Coniston. The rest of our time will be gainfully employed in the wonderful Western Yorkshire Dales including a trip from Ribblehead, with its famed viaduct and small railway museum, to Appleby-in-Westmorland on the glorious Settle/Carlisle line followed by a visit to the delightful village of Muker and a spectacular drive home over the Buttertubs Pass. We will also make a 'late' start one day to allow you time to explore Clapham village itself and we will circumnavigate Malham Cove with its remarkable limestone pavements. Our proposed itinerary for this year includes: The remains of Cistercian Whalley Abbey on the banks of the River Calder, the lovely Forest of Bowland villages at Chipping, Dunsop Bridge and Slaidburn, the remarkable restored All Hallows Church at Mitton and the famed Trough of Bowland climbing to views across Morecambe Bay. The cobbled streets of the lovely village of Dent with a stop at their delightful new Heritage Centre and to Brigflatts - the oldest Quaker Meeting House in the North. The pretty market town of KIrkby Lonsdale and perhaps the nearby village of Ingleton. Brantwood - John Ruskin's spectacularly positioned house above Lake Coniston (or you might prefer a lake trip out on the famous "Gondola"). Hawkshead -"The prettiest village in the Lake District" and highly photogenic Tarn Hows. Hubberholme Forest Chapel to search for 'mice' on the Robert "Mouseman" Thompson pews and tiny St. Leonard's with its touching memorials to 'railway dead', also lunch at the Wensleydale Creamery during a visit to Hawes or the excellent Dales Museum. The backdrop for much of our week will be the glorious Three Peaks of Ingleborough, Whernside and Pen-Y-Ghent and, as ever, we will spend much of our time off the beaten track just trickling along on lovely lanes and byways! Please note that we will eat out at a good local establishment on one night of this holiday. Based in the heart of the lovely conservation village of Clapham, near Settle, in Yorkshire. Guest House : Arbutus House - built in 1830 as the vicarage for one of the prettiest villages in The Dales. Train meeting from Lancaster. All prices are in GB pounds (GBP), per person, per holiday,
and are pretty much all-inclusive - see holiday
